Herschel Walker was born in Augusta, Georgia and grew up outside of Wrightsville, Georgia. For the first eleven years of his life, Herschel Walker showed little interest in sports, preferring to read books and write poetry. However, at the young age of twelve, Walker began a huge exercise program. Over the next year, he did 100,000 push-ups, 100,000 sit-ups and sprinted thousands of miles. Upon completing the program, Walker realized that his future was in sports and began to compete at the high school level.
In 1980, Walker was offered over 100 athletic scholarships and finally chose to attend the University of Georgia. Walker quickly stepped int (and brought the UGA football program) into the national spotlight. As a freshman at UGA Walker led the team to an undefeated regular season and a Sugar Bowl victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win College Football's National Championship. Herschel was a consensus All-American and ended up third in the Heisman Trophy voting that season. He also set records with 1,616 total yards, a rushing average of 146.9 yards, and fifteen touchdowns. Walker went on to be named a consensus All-American in each of the three seasons he played at UGA, setting 10 NCAA records, 15 Southeast Conference records, 30 Georgia all-time records, and capped a sensational college career by earning the 1982 Heisman Trophy in his junior year. At the end of his Georgia career, Walker's total of 5,259 yards gained was the most ever by a college running back in a three-year career and made him the third leading rusher in NCAA history. His three seasons for UGA were the schools most successful in its long football history. The Bulldog's won three straight conference titles and posted a record of thirty-three wins and only three losses.
What could have been? In 1983, Walker decided for forgo his final year of eligibility and signed a then record $1.5 million annual contract with the N.J. Generals of the USFL. Donald Trump made him one of the highest-paid players in all of professional football. Even though Walker only played three season of college football, he is clearly one of the most dominate players in NCAA history, not to mention the top running back of all-time.
