Most Underrated College Football Conference

First of all, let me preface my opinion that I am a fan of Oregon college football, meaning both the University of Oregon and Oregon State.

I believe that the Pac-10 was the strongest overall conference in college football in 2008. Let me back that up. For the last 5 years, the Pac-10 has the best bowl record of any Div. I NCAA football conference, the best indicator of the strength of the conference is how they stack up to other conferences. The Pac-10 has won 67% of their bowl games, and a very impressive 100% for 2008, and 82% for the past 2 years.

The SEC has not even won one half of its bowl games for the past 5 years (48%). The only other BCS conference with a winning bowl record is the Big 12 with a 53% win record. So who is winning these bowl games? Not the SEC, not the ACC, or Big 10. It’s the Pac-10 baby!!

The story these win percentages also tell is that the BCS somehow believes some conferences are better than they really are. Why else does the Big 10 get matched up with teams that they can’t beat in a bowl game? They are a dismal 12 and 23 in bowl games in the past 5 years.

Does that mean that the BCS ranking, which ranked the best team in college football, USC, at #5, is biased too? Absolutely, they go hand in hand. The percentages show that there seems to be some heavy bias in favor of the Big Ten and against the Pac-10 in terms of how they are ranked vs. how they perform. So, even if you don’t agree that the Pac-10 is the best conference based on its bowl records, you must agree that it is the most underrated conference in college football.

I believe that the Big 12 is underrated and should be measured as an equal to the SEC in football - at least right now. Last season (2008), the Big …
