Best All-Time Dallas Cowboys Linebacker

Lee Roy Jordan was the best all-time Dallas Cowboys linebacker. In his 14 year career with Dallas, Jordan intercepted 32 passes; returning them 472 yards, with three touchdowns. He also recovered 18 fumbles in his career as a middle linebacker. Jordon holds the Cowboys’ record with 1,236 combined career tackles as well as the most career solo Cowboys’ tackles with 743. He’s second in assisted tackles with 493.

Jordon was born in Alabama in 1941. He started his football career with the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in 1960. Lee Roy was well versed in football rivalry and knew what it took to become the best; a lot of hard work and dedication along with a huge part of the fearless factor. His first year with Bama Lee Roy Jordan was honored as Most Valuable Player of the Bluebonnet Bowl. From there he just grew into even more of a stronger player. Crimson Tide coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant was extremely impressed with Jordan’s talent. In fact, he later said about Jordan that “he was one of the finest football players the world has ever seen.”

In 1963, the Dallas Cowboys drafted Lee Roy Jordan. During his 14-year tenure, he assisted the Cowboys in three Super Bowl wins and five NFC Championship games. For a linebacker, Jordon was small. The average linebacker measures in at about 6'3 in the 250s-280 range. Jordan measured in at 6’1” and 215 pounds. What Jordan lacked in size he definitely made up for in ambition, devotion, competitiveness, and determination to be the best he could be.

Nicknamed by his teammates “Killer” and for good cause, Jordan had the drive and fearless attitude of a killer and would not let anyone stand in his way of getting his job done. He would spend endless hours watching game clips, looking for even the slightest flaws that could be perfected. Not only was he a fierce defender against the run and pass, sadistically accurate in recovering loose balls, a tackling maniac, he was also a man with a heart that ran deep for his team and fellow players, for the game of football.

Jordon retired his gear after the 1976 season with much respect from his fellow teammates and the Cowboys’ franchise. The head coach during Jordon’s career was Tom Landry. When Landry reflected on Jordon, words like “great leader” and “highly competitive player” are what you heard. Jordon’s three-interception game is still considered one of the top ten most memorable moments in the history of Texas Stadium.

Lee Roy Jordon was certainly one of the top linebackers in NFL history and no surprise he is a member of the Cowboys “Ring of Fame”. Jordon now resides in Point Clear, Alabama where he heads up Lee Roy Jordon Lumber Company based out of Dallas Texas. However, Jordon will always be remembered by his fans as the best all-time Dallas Cowboys Linebacker.
