The top flight of English soccer has produced some amazing teams since the Football League was first established in 1888. When the top clubs broke away to form the Premier League in 1992, the sport was elevated to new heights becoming the biggest soccer league in the world.
The league now attracts the best players from all over the globe resulting in a division full of real life fantasy teams. But which teams have produced the most spectacular seasons? We look at three of the best.
Of all the Premier League clubs, Manchester City are perhaps the most symbolic of the Premier League era. In 1996, despite their rich history and large fan base, the club dropped out of the Premier League and sunk to the third tier of English football. They fought their way back to the top flight, but were plagued by financial issues until a takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group enabled them to sign a host of high profile players.
Since then, the club has been transformed into one of the dominant forces in world football. In 2016, they recruited the world's highest ranked coach, Pep Guardiola, and became one of the most exciting to watch in the league. This culminated in a title win in the 2017/18 in which City became the first club to break the 100-point barrier. They also broke records for the most consecutive away wins (11), most consecutive victories in all competitions (20) and most consecutive league wins (18). Such is their status now, they were odds on with MoPlay.com to win a major trophy before the 2018/19 season even began.
Leicester's style of the play was the polar opposite to what other top teams were attempting at the time. Possession-based football was rejected in favour of a defensive discipline and fast counter-attacks.
But the most remarkable aspect of their title win was the fact it came from nowhere. The club had finished 14th the season before and began the campaign amongst the favourites for relegation having recruited veteran coach Claudio Ranieri.
The Italian guided the underdogs to victory by 10 clear points, losing just three games along the way. Striker Jamie Vardy broke the record for the scoring in the most consecutive games while Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante were masterful in midfield.
There were other teams that nearly made the list, but the final spot in our top three title wins had to go to Arsenal's invincible side of 2003/04.
Arsenal's achievement was remarkable considering no team had gone unbeaten in the English football league since Preston North End achieved the feat in the inaugural season of 1888/89.
The Gunners were guided by Frenchman Arsene Wenger who built a team solid at the back and devastating in attack. The team often used their attacking prowess as their first line of defence, bludgeoning teams into submission with the pace and skill of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires.
Patrick Vieira controlled the engine room while Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Lauren and Kolo Toure provided a defensive but technically capable rear blockade. Behind them, goalkeeper Jens Lehmann had the season of his life.
Honourable mentions must also go to the Manchester United teams of 1998/99 and 2008/2009, and the Chelsea team of 2004/2005.
