With the addition of All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, the Golden State Warriors have reaffirmed their title chances for the next season and beyond and we haven't even seen them play yet - such is the nature of NBA superteams.
Although built to win, superteams don't work always. In some cases, however, like the Lebron James-led Heat, they are indeed the team to beat. Until they break-up, of course.
While on the topic of NBA, the Summer League is already underway, featuring some of the hottest prospects from this year's draft. If you're a serious bettor, you really need to give the odds and markets at novibet.co.uk a look – we're sure you'll find enticing odds that could bring you a nice sum of money.
"Not one, not two, not three, not four..." Lebron James' quote on media day following his departure from the Cavaliers and signing with the Heat will forever stay ringing in the heads of Heat fans. In the end, Lebron's promise didn't come to a full realization, with Miami winning only 2 titles during the Big 3 era.
Still, this Heat was the first superteam after the 2007-2008 Celtics and was seriously good. As a matter of fact, every team with a smart general manager tried building a superteam to face the Heat at the time. It didn't really work as the Heat went to 4 straight Finals before the Heatles era was over and Miami went back to being mediocre.
Who could forget Boston's memorable championship against the Lakers in 2008? Featuring Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Rajon Rondo, this Celtics side was constructed with a simple goal in mind – to dethrone the Lakers. They succeeded in 2008, although they failed to win another title, eventually disbanding the superteam after five seasons.
Adding future Hall of Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton in their starting lineup which also featured Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant didn't work the way everyone hoped it would. The Lakers lost the Finals to a great Detroit Pistons team which was the exact opposite of a superteam. After one failed season, the Lakers superteam disbanded, at least for a few years when Pau Gasol joined Bryant in LA during the 2007-2008 season.
After leaving the Miami Heat, Lebron James headed back to his hometown Cleveland. They quickly acquired Kevin Love from Minnesota by trading their top draft pick Andrew Wiggins, and together with Kyrie Irving, Cleveland looked every bit of a superteam.
The Cavaliers managed to get a title in 2016 after coming back from 3-1 down against the Golden State Warriors, but the team was surrounded with a lot of controversies and ultimately broke up. Irving went to Boston in 2017, while Lebron signed with the Lakers this summer.
When the Warriors added All-Star guard Kevin Durant to their team, we all knew the rest of the league is doomed. Two years and two titles later, the Warriors are probably the best superteam in the history of the NBA. To make thing worse, they've added DeMarcus Cousins to their star-studded lineup this summer, (probably) leaving the other teams to play for second.
